The past week we have been learning about the Scientific method/inquiry with Pumpkins! We have done several experiments such as Will a pumpkin sink or float? Does a bigger or smaller pumpkin have more creases...weigh the most...have more seeds? Your child should know the scientific process by now: Ask a Question, Form a Hypothesis (I think.../Prediction), Test by following procedures, Record Observations, Write a Conclusion.
In Math we are continuing to use place value to add two digit numbers. I would still like to get you the link for our math so you can see the lessons at home. We are still trying to get you access to this. I hope by conferences I can have that info for you. Your child needs to master the basic concepts of counting by tens, starting at any number, (example: 23, 33, 43, etc.). They should also be able to quickly locate the tens and ones spot, and therefore break the numbers apart then add tens and ones together. We will begin Topic 4 next week!
We are almost finished with our Personal Narratives. The kids have been working so hard on these and we should be finished with our final copies next week. We will have an author's celebration! We've learned about entertaining beginnings, transition words, juicy details, correct punctuation/capitalization, and good endings. These are the things you should see in their writing now.
I've started working with Guided Reading Groups now! I look forward to watching your child's reading level grow!
Homework: When your child doesn't have math homework, please make sure they are practicing their spelling words. Knowing high frequency words at first glance is so important for reading and writing. Reading should also be happening at home each day. Even if it's just for 5 or 10 minutes before bed or in the car. I know we are all busy but let's try to make sure reading is a part of our daily routine. As a parent, I know it can be hard, so I am practicing this one as well!! :) I have Hudson read to me while I'm getting ready in the mornings, on the way to school, while I'm cooking supper, etc. These are just a few ideas for you on how to make it happen during our busy everyday lives!
